Summary
Pediatric sleep-related breathing disorder (SRBD) encompasses a spectrum of breathing abnormalities during sleep, ranging from primary snoring to more severe conditions such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The management of pediatric SRBD poses a multifaceted challenge due to the diverse nature of the disorder, involving anatomical, physiological, and behavioral factors unique to the pediatric population. This symposium reviews the key challenges and diversities encountered in the management of pediatric SRBD, highlighting the complexity of the condition and the need for a comprehensive, individualized approach across borders. The appropriateness of each intervention is influenced by the age, severity, and underlying causes of SRBD, further underscoring the need for personalized care within each country's healthcare system. Additionally, the acceptance and adherence to treatment plans can vary widely among pediatric patients, introducing behavioral considerations that are unique to this population. That is, cultural and socioeconomic diversities also play a crucial role in the management of pediatric SRBD. Variances in
healthcare access, availability of trained sleep specialists, cost of care, parental education, and cultural beliefs may impact the timeliness and quality of interventions, leading to disparities in outcomes among different populations. A comprehensive and individualized approach, encompassing utilizing available resources, diagnostic precision, consideration of anatomical and physiological diversities, and awareness of cultural and socioeconomic influences, is essential for optimizing outcomes in pediatric patients with SRBD across the world.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this CME activity, participants will be able to:
• Describe the usual diagnosis and management of children and adolescents with SRBD in South America
• Analyze the differences in health care for diagnosis and strategies for surgical, orthodontics, and CPAP therapies
• Recognize how economic, sociocultural, and regional aspects interfere with the health care of children with SRBD
• Interpret the heterogeneity in pediatric SRBD and the need for personalized treatment
• Explore the impact of healthcare access, socioeconomic factors, and disparities on SRBD management
• Discuss alternative diagnostic methods in resource-limited settings and the potential for emerging research to improve outcomes
• Develop strategies for enhancing multi-disciplinary collaboration in SRBD management
• Determine the prevalence of SRBD in diverse US population
• Explain current approaches in diagnosis and management in resource-rich setting
• Identify challenges and gaps in the current management of SRBD children in the US
• Discuss the way forward for management of SRBD in children
• Illustrate the prevalence, causes, risk factors, and impact of SRBD in children in Africa
• Learn about challenges in managing SRBD and the influence of cultural and socio-economic factors on outcomes
• Explore diagnostic tools, treatment options, and strategies to improve access to SRBD diagnosis and care in Africa
• Identify at-risk children for obstructive SDB and follow the European Respiratory Society's diagnostic and treatment guidelines
• Recognize the unique needs of patients under two year
• Recognize the importance of a multidisciplinary approach and specialized pediatric sleep labs
• Know treatment options, indications, and outcomes for pediatric SDB
