Summary
Growing evidence suggests that the microbiota-gut-brain axis plays an important role in sleep and circadian rhythms. Studies have shown significant associations between the microbiota dysbiosis and sleep restriction and various sleep disorders, although the specific mechanisms remain to be elucidated. This symposium will review some of the most recent evidence from animal and human studies documenting the link between the microbiota (oral and gut) and sleep-wake disturbances. Evidence on the bidirectional interaction between the gut microbiota and sleep through metabolic, immune, and neural pathways will be reviewed (Lu). Potential mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of various sleep disorders will be examined, specifically related to obstructive sleep apnea (Pépin), sleep bruxism (Lavigne) and insomnia disorder (Morin). Implications for future microbiota-based therapeutic interventions for sleep disorders will be reviewed.
Learning objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
· Analyze the role of the microbiota-gut-brain axis in sleep disorders and evaluate microbiome-targeted interventions for improving sleep health.
· Analyze the impact of intermittent hypoxia on gut microbiota in obstructive sleep apnea and evaluate its role in systemic inflammation, metabolic disturbances, and cognitive dysfunction.
· Explore the potential role of the oral microbiota in sleep bruxism and assess the challenges in interpreting current research on its contribution to SB pathology.
· Investigate the potential effects of probiotics on insomnia and psychological symptoms and discern their role in modulating the microbiota-gut-brain axis.
