Summary

Pediatric sleep health is a critical component of overall well-being, yet it remains under-recognized and under-diagnosed across healthcare disciplines. This symposium will highlight the latest advancements, multidisciplinary approaches, and evidence-based strategies for optimizing sleep health in children and adolescents. The session emphasizes the integration of dental, medical, behavioral, and educational perspectives to address sleep-related disorders, including obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), and behavioral sleep issues.
The symposium fosters collaboration among specialists in sleep medicine, pediatrics, dentistry, psychology, and public health to develop a cohesive framework for addressing pediatric sleep challenges. Attendees will gain practical tools to enhance diagnosis, treatment, and patient outcomes while addressing barriers to care and exploring culturally sensitive solutions.

Learning Objectives:

• Establish a comprehensive approach to pediatric OSA by recognizing key risk factors
• Develop personalized treatment plans and monitor outcomes to ensure long-term effectiveness
• Promote collaboration among providers, caregivers, and educators to address the broader impacts on children’s health
• Recognize the biological principles of maxillary expansion and its impact on craniofacial development
• Explore the mechanisms by which expansion influence airway dimensions and function
• Learn to assess and apply expansion techniques as part of a comprehensive approach
• Explore the role of orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT) as an approach in managing obstructive sleep apnea
• Determine the mechanisms by which OMT enhances treatment outcomes
• Learn to integrate OMT into multidisciplinary care plans to optimize patient management
• Distinguish developmental aspect of pediatric airways and sleep disordered breathing (SDB) during sleep
• Identify various physiologic and anatomical factor leading to SDB and learn how to phenotype pediatric SDB in clinical practice
• Illustrate the principles of precision medicine and collaboration in Pediatric SDB
