Summary

Sleep is supportive of immune function; quality sleep helps reduce likelihood of developing respiratory infection and it promotes development of titers after vaccination. The COVID-19 pandemic saw millions of deaths world-wide, and in its wake we are left with many more millions globally, suffering with the post-acute sequelae referred to as Long COVID. The social and economic burden of Long COVID is extreme and patients and families dealing with this heterogeneous condition have had their health burden and quality of life dramatically reduced, post-COVID. Among the most debilitating new onset or worsening symptoms associated with this disease are sleep disturbances including circadian rhythm abnormalities, insomnia and hypersomnia, and sleep disordered breathing. These disorders are accompanied by unrefreshing sleep and profound daytime fatigue. What do we know of the role of sleep in prevention and recovery from Long COVID? This symposium will examine these relationships and look forward to how our knowledge of sleep-immune interactions may facilitate development of interventions to help solve long COVID’s unrefreshing sleep and profound fatigue.
