Summary

The presenters in this symposium include recognized experts in the field of pediatric sleep medicine who will discuss therapies for management of OSA in children. The talks are placed in the context of how far we have come, 45 years on from the first trials of CPAP, with chair Emeritus Professor Colin Sullivan, founder of CPAP preceding over this symposium.
Professor Karen Waters will provide a comprehensive overview of CPAP therapy for pediatric OSA, discussing how knowledge has progressed over time to support successful initiation and adherence to therapy. She will also discuss monitoring techniques and some of the challenges with an increasing population of children requiring CPAP therapy.
Dr Lena Xiao has a specific interest in alternative therapies for childhood OSA and will present data from a randomized crossover trial to examine the efficacy of positional therapy for pediatric OSA. She will discuss this option in the context of developing personalized treatment strategies for pediatric OSA.
Professor Indra Narang will discuss the role of heated high flow nasal cannula therapy for the management of children with OSA, presenting findings from a randomized crossover trial comparing CPAP with High Flow therapy. She will discuss the potential sub-populations in whom this therapy may be a suitable option, continuing the discussion around personalized treatment for pediatric OSA.
Professor Fernanda Almeida will provide the dental perspective on orthodontic treatment options for pediatric OSA. This topic has gained significant interest in recent years and concerningly therapies are increasingly being utilized without appropriate evaluation and indication. Professor Almeida will discuss these controversies and provide a recommended approach to collaborative care with oral health for pediatric OSA patients.
Finally, Professor Stacey Ishman will bring her surgical sleep medicine expertise to this symposium and discuss the role of hypoglossal nerve stimulation for selected pediatric patients with residual OSA. She will present the latest evidence related to this technique, illustrate its potential role form her own clinical practice and summarize by discussing an overall approach to residual OSA in children.
This symposium will provide a fantastic overview of the progress made in pediatric OSA management since CPAP was first introduced 45yrs ago and benefits from the expertise of Professor Colin Sullivan who developed this ground breaking treatment.
