Summary

This symposium presented by the International Surgical Sleep Society (ISSS) will present the important, misunderstood and under-utilised roles of anatomical surgery in the management of adults with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The evidence for surgery in adult OSA has been growing with multiple randomised controlled trials with long term data, large population studies and the role of mean disease alleviation to compare treatment options. Current evidence shows that in the appropriately chosen patient, surgery improves outcomes when compared to patients that are not adequately treated through conventional treatment measures. It will review current guidelines on when to refer a patient and the latest evidence in the field of adult OSA surgery. We will also finish the session with an entertaining debate on surgery in OSA, with presenters representing both side of the role of surgery in OSA, and open up to the audience for involvement.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this CME activity, participants will be able to:
• Summarize modern surgical techniques and be up to date with latest international guidelines on when to refer to for consideration of surgery
• Identify the latest evidence for how surgery can facilitate conventional treatment options to improve compliance
• Define the latest evidence in the field of anatomic OSA surgery and the role it plays when conventional treatments have failed or have been rejected
• Describe the concept of mean disease alleviation and how it applies to the evaluation of OSA treatment
• Illustrate the arguments for and against structural surgery and where it should be considered given the advances in technology and understanding of OSA
